Difference Between Assisted Living and Long Term Care
Assisted living communities range from stand-alone residences in some cases, to being one level of care offered within a larger residence or retirement village. On the other hand, long-term care is required for seniors who need the availability of 24-hour care and supervision. In many cases, there may be a variety of care options offered in the same retirement residence, and retirement homes may offer or allow home health care services for residents who require some assisted living.
What does assisted living include?
Assisted living retirement homes may include the administration or supervision of medication, or select personal care services by trained staff. Residents who have periods of temporary incapacity due to illness, injury, or recuperation from surgery are allowed to remain in the residence, or to return from a rehabilitation center, skilled nursing facility or hospital if appropriate services can be provided by the assisted living residence. However, assisted living residences do not provide the level of continuous skilled medical care found in nursing homes and hospitals, where long-term or continuing care is required.

Long-term care (nursing homes)
Long-term care homes provide nursing, care and services for the elderly who cannot look after their personal needs by themselves. For example, a senior with a prolonged physical or chronic illness, disability or cognitive disorder would need the services and skilled care available in a long-term care home or nursing home. Such senior homes also provide help for seniors with cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer's Disease or other forms of dementia. Long-term care homes are suites for individuals who require the availability of 24-hour nursing care and supervision within a secure setting. In general, long-term care facilities offer a high level of medical care and support. Long-term care homes can also range from a single residence to being one level of care in a CCRC (continuing care retirement community).
A well-chosen senior home can offer a smooth and happy life to aging seniors who can avail of professional services in a warm and caring environment. Assisted Living care homes are for seniors who do not need continuous medical aid whereas long term care is for seniors who may be bed-ridden or in need of constant care, medication and therapeutic services. In other words, nursing homes or long term care homes are for older adults who require care round-the-clock care whereas assisted living is for the relatively healthy and active senior.
Many contemporary retirement homes offer a continuum that includes these and other levels of care. In some cases, long term care may be available in a luxury retirement home, where beds and suites have been made available due to low residency rates. This provides a unique opportunity for some seniors and their families who may not otherwise have the means to get this level of care and comfort.
